On September 11, 2001, America suffered its most tragic and devastating terrorist attack, when the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were hit and subsequently collapsed. On that single day 343 New York City Firefighters died in their effort to save as many people as possible, which they ultimately did. In the aftermath of the catastrophic attack on New York City, when the scope of the tragic amount of carnage known to us and the world, though there were many stories of individual heroism by rescue workers and private citizens, no single group sustained the degree of loss suffered by the New York City Firefighters. The heart and spirit of the firefighter brothers remaining touched the very core of America, resulting in hundreds of thousands if not millions of items showered on every firehouse, including flowers, money, letters, drawings and notes from children across the country, original art, teddy bears and gifts of every description for months and months following the devastating attack.
This outpouring of love has been to say the least overwhelming, and it is the desire of the men and women of New York City Fire Department and their families to voice a public thank you to a grateful America. Obviously it is not possible to thank everyone individually, but it is hoped that through this video, carrying messages representing firehouses from all five boroughs that the people and especially the children of America will understand how very vital their messages were to New York’s Bravest. More than 150 firefighters from 26 different houses participated in this personal and moving expression of gratitude to let the children know that their efforts meant something special to them. Every New York City firefighter shared in this loss, so their words come straight from the heart. There words will become a part of the permanent record of 9/11.
The Uniformed Firefighters’ Association requested that the West Side Cultural Center produce a video program allowing the firefighters and surviving family members to thank the American people and most especially the children. In addition to broadcast, 25,000 copies of the video will be sent to schools across the country. Because of the UFA sponsorship, we have had the unique opportunity of access to all New York City Fire Department Companies.
The New York Firefighters Thank America! is a Uniformed Firefighters Association Project, produced by the West Side Cultural Center. This video is not available in stores but will be distributed to schools all over the country at no charge. In its preparation and distribution stage, the Project is in a current campaign to raise funds for duplication in video and DVD.
